Grey Blending is such a current and important service to add to your salon service menu. It has become a movement in hair colour that many clients are excited about. Anything that helps us engage more effectively with our clients and communicate tasteful hair colour in a way that really works for our clients and their maintenance expectations, is very exciting.

Grey Blending and more conscious hair colour placement give colourists and salons the opportunity to increase the variety of hair colour services on offer, and ensures we are creating hair colour that works for all clients. Grey Blending does not mean no colour at all, it often is a hair colour journey over several visits to create the perfect blend, and grey blending can be used to add modern tones to grey hair keeping it absolutely on trend.

In the past we have seen trends dominate the high street, such as the perm era, the highlight decade, balayage, vivid colours, and tonal work. Now, there is a move towards natural hair enhancement. Grey Blending is an opportunity to launch new salon services and techniques and re-engage with loyal clients in a new way that excites them more.

From a salon perspective we are using this as an opportunity to revamp our service menu. We are implementing new names for salon services - talking trends and colour concepts rather than techniques – making it much more consumer friendly. The term Grey Blending is great because it is clear and obvious. Sometimes as hairdressers we talk in hairdressing language rather than consumer language, so for us, this is way of talking about colour in a more relevant way.

Grey Blending as a colour service is a way of planning a hair journey therefore building on client loyalty. For us, the journey starts with The Transition, followed by The Condition, which is the treatment plan, and then The Tone, which is glossing, toning and home care.

This is a refreshing way of approaching hair colour. It is not just about a technique to make money, but services that provide the very best hair for our clients. Happy clients become even more loyal clients!

With this in mind, why not create a package for the client which on top of the initial appointment, can incorporate a return visit to the salon to check how the colour result is working. This is a way of getting people back into the salon again more frequently, particularly with a lower maintenance such as Grey Blending.

I believe that to achieve the perfect grey blend, understanding undertones and the best ways of lightening hair to create the perfect ash tone is important. This is where all the Wella education I have done comes in handy - I have really developed my colour skills to a deeper level. It’s worth exploring.

There are some key products that really enable grey blending to come to life like ILLUMINA COLOR, Color Touch and Color Touch Plus. In terms of technique and placement, start slow, less is more. Try multi tonal foils – use several tones on one section or packet.

We have an incredible portfolio of colour products that offer all the subtle differences we need, this coupled with our skills and expertise is what will bring the Grey Blending to life on every client in a unique way.
